August 2007

The Mid-Carolina Rifle Club in Columbia was the site of a Women in the Outdoors event sponsored by the National Wild Turkey Federation Saturday, July 21.

Event coordinator Tracy Gates said that the club not only provided the facilities for the event, but also 18 instructors and firearms for the women to use. Although the event had a smaller turn out than normal, with about 20 women participating, Gates said that everyone had a good time shooting and received one on one time with the instructors. “They shoot all day,” she said, “as many rounds as they want. I think everyone’s had fun and enjoyed it.”

In addition to shooting handguns, rifles and shotguns, the women also had a chance to visit the archery range with certified instructors Margaret Cundall and Susan Zilke of the National Archery Association using equipment provided by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

Gates would like to thank the Mid-Carolina Rifle Club for their support as well as the following businesses whose donations of food and other items made the event successful: ACE Hardware House in Cayce, Dick’s, Krispy Kreme, Otis Spunkmeyer, Shooter’s Choice and Terminix.
